Scholarships for Overseas Students

Introduction
Each year, the University awards a number of scholarships to overseas students (graduates and undergraduates) of high academic calibre.
The scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis and the selection takes into account academic ability and financial need.
The annual value of the scholarships is one-third or one-sixth of the appropriate tuition fee and scholarships are tenable for the duration of the award holder's course, subject to satisfactory progress.
Because the scholarships cover only part of the fees, award holders are expected to show that they can meet the balance of the tuition fee and their living expenses from other sources.
The closing date for the receipt of applications is 1 May of the year in which admission is sought, but candidates should apply as early as possible.
Late applications cannot normally be considered.
Please note that these scholarships do not cover programmes of study at HYMS.
Applications should be made on a special form which is available from The International Office.

Funding International Students

THIS PAGE ANSWERS some of the key financial questions international students will need to consider when thinking about coming to the UK to study.
Where can I find out more about cost of living expenses?
Aside from tuition fees, students need to ensure they can cover their day-to-day expenses. The British Council provides excellent information on the cost of living in the UK via the Education UK website and the Studying and living in the United Kingdom guide. This can vary considerably between regions, so it is best to check the website of your proposed university to see estimated local costs.
What financial help is available for international students coming to the UK to study?
Limited awards are available for international students coming to the UK. Some of these are funded by the British government, including the Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme (ORSAS) for research students of exceptional calibre, and the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) which funds a number of postgraduate places for students from Commonwealth countries. Other scholarships are offered by organisations such as the Fulbright Commission. Details of all schemes are available from the British Council.
A scholarship search database can be found on the Education UK website. A similar database is also available through Hotcourses' funding pages. In addition, many universities and colleges also have their own scholarships for which international students may be eligible.
What working rights do international students have when coming to the UK?
Students from the European Union have the same working rights as UK residents, and should be able to find part-time or vacation work if necessary. No special permits are required. Non-EU students may be able to work, depending on their visa. The Education UK website has full information on working whilst studying in the UK. For more advice, contact the international office at your institution.
